5 Tools for Your Journey to Self-Discovery

Man on Road Trip

Do you ever wonder what a cat or dog sees when they look at themselves in the mirror? What about the times we catch a toddler glimpsing a reflection of themselves in a bathroom or hallway mirror: what do they see? Do they see themselves as we see them, or is there a different point of view that we know nothing about? Do dogs compare the length of their tails with each other? Or the sound of their voices?

I have always been fascinated by the process of self discovery, not only of myself but watching others find out about themselves and the world around them. Who—or what—we think we present to our world isn't necessarily how the world sees us. I have found that the more we know and understand ourselves, the more comfortable in our skin we become. When we "get it" that we don’t have to be perfect, and we are more resilient, or creative or entrepreneurial, or unkind, or lacking in EQ, or forgetting fun and our values or can make people laugh, the richer our experience of this life becomes. I believe that by discovering ourselves, who we truly are, the dark and the light, the good and the not so good, we make the world a richer place—both for ourself and for others. Let's face it: what we know about ourselves comes from our family and the society in whic we grew up, including our schools and workplaces. So, it's really not a complete picture. It's the interpretation of other people of who we are.

How about YOU finding out who YOU are? True self-awareness is a journey that requires self-reflection, introspection, and the courage to face one's fears and insecurities. On this journey there are several tools that we can use, each with its own unique lessons and insights. In my book Your Guide to Self Discovery, you can be taken on a fun journey through chapters—curated and written by world experts—to help you find the aspects of yourself that you may have overlooked. These are tools that you can use to create a new view of your potential and understanding of you. Chapters include astrology, numerology, hand reading, birth order, dreams, spirit and animal guides…even past lives and how you can change your karma, should you wish to. This is an opportunity to do a personal archeological dig to find the wonderful hidden parts of yourself.

Here are some additional tools you can use along the fun journey of self-discovery:

  1. The first step on the journey of self-discovery is self-awareness. Self-awareness involves being in tune with your thoughts, feelings, and actions. It means paying attention to how you respond to different situations and being honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. Self-awareness helps you to understand yourself better, and it's the foundation for personal growth and development.
  2. The second step is introspection. Introspection involves looking inward and examining your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It's a form of self-reflection that helps you to understand why you do what you do. By examining your motivations and behaviors, you can gain insights into your personality and make positive changes in your life.
  3. Next is self-compassion. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and acceptance. It means being gentle with yourself when you make mistakes and acknowledging your own worth and value. Self-compassion helps you to build self-esteem and resilience, and it's essential for maintaining good mental health.
  4. Creativity, however it manifests for you. Use it, expand it, find ways to add it into your daily life. Even something as simple as going to work a different way each day for a week gets your creative brain actively working!
  5. A key part of the journey of self-discovery is purpose. Purpose involves understanding your unique gifts and talents and using them to make a positive impact in the world. It's about finding meaning and fulfillment in your life and living in alignment with your values and beliefs.

Ultimately, discovering who you truly are, including the not-so-great bits, is a journey that can be both fun and rewarding, but it requires self-reflection, introspection, and a willingness to face one's fears and insecurities. And the reward is tremendous. There is nothing better than feeling comfortable and confident inside your skin. Ultimately this brings feelings of safety, fulfillment, and happiness.

I would love to hear from you how you choose to find your whole self!

Namaste.
