The hare was a sacred animal in many cultures. It was both feared and venerated due to its nocturnal activities and its ability to "disappear" into the landscape. For these reasons, in later times the hare became associated with Witches. In March, when hares breed, their behavior becomes unpredictable. They appear in the daytime and in the moonlight, and their actions are erratic-hence the expression "mad as a March hare." Witches were said to be able to turn themselves into hares by reciting a certain charm. We can honor the hare now by learning to adopt its form spiritually and to learn its power and wisdom. Here is a modern revision of a Scottish Witch charm to use in a meditative journey. Repeat it three times:

I shall go intill a hare
With loyalty and honor there.
I go in the name of the Old Ways
Ay while I come home again.
