Two of the most common symbols associated with St. Patrick, the shamrock and hazel wood, have ancient links to magic. The three-leafed clover known as the shamrock was used by St. Patrick to teach the meaning of the Holy Trinity to the Celts. But it has even older associations with magic. It symbolized the Spring Equinox to the Druids, and the Celts used it in spring and summer magic. It also represents the Triple Goddess aspect. As for the hazel, this wood is thought to have been used for the magic rod, which aided St. Patrick in driving the snakes out of Ireland. Since this St. Patrick's Day falls on a Friday, try adding crushed hazel nuts to a love or fertility charm. It should yield powerful results.
