In addition to the harvest of grain which begins in the month of August, the Earth showers abundance upon us in many forms. Take time to notice the fruits of the land at this time of year: crab apples, rowan berries, blackberries, elderberries, and acorns. What fruits and other edible wild plants are available in the area where you live? There are many folk traditions associated with the gathering of "the wild bounty." In Cornwall, it was believed that blackberries should be picked before the first of October (and that blackberry stains would not disappear while the fruit was still in season). A good season of blackberries was equated with a good season of herring, an important food source in ancient times. In addition, it was considered unlucky to cut an elder tree or its blossom without first asking its permission or apologizing to the spirit of the tree.
