At the end of the harvest, people in Wales created a caseg fedi or "harvest mare," an ornament made from the last tuft of grain to be harvested. When the last sheaf of grain was standing alone in the field, one of the men would kneel and divide it into three parts and braid them skillfully together. Reapers stood back from the sheaf and took turns throwing their reaping hooks at it. The one who was successful cried out, "Early in the morning I got on her track. Late in the evening I followed her. I have had her, I have had her!" The others then ask, "What did you have?" and he answers "Gwrach, gwrach, gwrach," a word meaning "hag" or "Witch." The Hag of Harvest was brought inside with much ceremony and displayed in a place of honor.
