Spell: Rose Lupercalia Ritual

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

On this day, the Romans celebrated Lupercalia in honor of Faunus and Flora. Across the empire, young men dressed up in furs and capered in the streets, carrying handfuls of goatskin thongs with which they swatted other citizens. Because these figures represented male goats, their activities promoted fertility and plentiful sexual energy. In addition, young girls put their names into a lottery, and the boys would draw a name to choose their partner for the festival. Temporary girlfriends and boyfriends exchanged gifts such as candy and flowers. These rites provided a kind of healthy outlet for youthful exuberance and romance, without letting things get too serious or overwhelming. Lupercalia is the rowdier Pagan ancestor of Valentine's Day. Celebrate this time by holding a feast and serving some goat stew and lots of finger foods for couples to share. Trade stories with each other. What was your greatest endeavor in love, or what was your most awkward romantic moment?
