LLEWELLYN'S SPELL-A-DAY

Spell: Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

January is named for Janus, the Roman god whose two faces look backward and forward. On your altar, set Janus or your two favorite gods or goddesses back to back. Have pen and paper handy. Light a black and a white candle. Cast your circle. Your intention is to examine the year just passed. Write down things you've done or said that you regret. Speak these words:

"Great Janus,
I'm looking at last year.
These are things that I regret.
I cannot undo or unsay them, but
I can express regret and apologize."

Read each regret aloud, then burn each one in the flame of the black candle.

Now consider this new year. On paper, white down your pledges to do better and read them out loud. Clip them together and keep them where you can read them as often as necessary. Say:

"Great Janus,
I pledge to do better this year.
When I'm standing on the edge of stupidity,
please remind me of my pledge."
