LLEWELLYN'S SPELL-A-DAY

Spell: Poem for the Self

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

It's both International Dance Day and Duke Ellington Day. Time for a spell to celebrate yourself! Gather these supplies:

  • Music (maybe Duke Ellington's?)
  • Word magnets or a pile of cutout words from magazines or newspapers (three dozen or so). This is your "word stash."
  • Blank paper or a magnetic surface

Put on your music and dance for a few minutes. Enjoy yourself! You can continue dancing as you pull words out of your word stash. Arrange them on the page or surface so the arrangement looks pleasing, without focusing on structure or content. Read the words as they now flow, and see how they resonate, and how each word holds a meaning, memory, or possibility. Even seemingly random words will have a flow and will create something unique to you. Photograph the poem you've created to honor yourself, print it out, and hang it where it will make you smile.
