Why Not Real Magick?

Magickal Incense

If you practice magick for even a short time, you'll learn the reality of Mark Twain's quote, "truth is stranger than fiction." The popularity of numerous "reality" television shows indicates this is true. But when it comes to magick, TV seems to ignore this. I liked Buffy and Angel and I like Ghost Whisperer, Charmed and The Dresden Files. But they're not based on real magick. Why not?

Author Tom Clancy wrote, "The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense," so perhaps it is simply easier to invent magickal universes than to take the reality and make it coherent. Perhaps TV writers are just lazy. Personally, I think a good writer could have tremendous room for invention and creativity while presenting real magick.

For example, how about a TV series called, "The Golden Dawn?" The writers could base the characters' personal relationships and the structure of the Order on information from Chic and Sandra Tabatha Cicero's The Essential Golden Dawn. A coherent magickal system is described there, as are rituals that are successfully practiced by thousands of people all over the world. Combine that reality-based background with a fictional story such as having members of the Order trying to solve a murder. For even more information on magick ranging from shapeshifting to invisibility they could consult The Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie.

Alternatively, how about a series called "Green Magic?" It could be about a coven of real Witches trying to prevent ecological crises. Base it around Ann Moura's book Green Magic. It reveals how Witches respect the powers and spirits of Nature, and know how to work with energies to accomplish magical goals. The writers could get even more information about Witchcraft from Ann's three Green Witchcraft books. They give a tremendous amount of information on Witchcraft oriented toward Earth magics.

So come on, Hollywood writers! Make your magick real.
