One of the most well-known maiden goddess stories is of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Persephone felt that it was her calling to go to the underworld to comfort and guide the spirits of the dead to their rest. Even though Demeter knew her daughter would return, she put her life on hold and waited. Because of Demeter's inactivity, the weather was cold, and grains and plants did not grow in the fields. When Persephone returned, bringing warmth and love for her mother, the Earth came alive again. At this time of year, the Earth is renew-ing herself. Signs of reawakening are everywhere. Honor the goddess by baking bread or by leaving an offering of grain in your favorite outdoor place. Take time to reflect on your winter journey. Plan your path into summer with fresh challenges to help you grow. This season of planting is also for spiritual seeds. |
