Fornacalia is a movable feast in honor of Fornax, goddess of the furnace, oven, and kiln. This fire goddess is also related to bread making. We celebrate her in thanksgiving for the earliest, newly gathered grain crops.
Create a fire outdoors, perhaps in a barbeque pit or in some other safe manner. In a ceramic bowl or jar, place some spelt. Have your group gather in a circle around the fire. Call the directions together: "Spirits of the north, we welcome you! Spirits of the east, we welcome you! Spirits of the south, we welcome you! Spirits of the west, we welcome you!" The leader says: "Goddess of the hearth!" The group repeats: "Goddess of the hearth!" The leader throws a handful of spelt toward the heavens. The group duplicates these actions. The circle is closed. The group breaks bread together. Corn bread or some other grainy loaf is shared with everyone seated in a circle. |
