As the goddess of living beings, Ceres governs over decline and death-the inevitable fate of the living. In ancient Rome, Pagans honored Ceres today in a day of fasting. Mystics have often used fasting to signal their physical bodies that change is coming. Think of fasting not as a deprivation but as an opportunity to observe the holes in our lives we are filling with food, sex, smoking, compulsive shopping, or television. Fasting is a way to regain self-control, thereby empowering us. Whatever you choose to fast from today, make it something that is meaningful enough that you will feel the sense of strength from having fasted from it. At day's close, burn an orange candle.
