Sometimes a situation just gets overwhelming. One of the best ways to regain control is to take a step back and get a little distance as best you can.
When you first recognize that things are running away with you, simply acknowledge this fact. You can even say soemthing like this, out loud if possible: "I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now." Next do your best to focus on your breathing and nothing else. Pay attention to the way the air feels going through your nose, throat, and lungs. Once you feel a bit calmer, bring your attention back to the situation at hand. Then deliberately take a step back, physically. Imagine you are taking a step back from the situation, not leaving it behind entirely but just getting breathing room. Then look at the situation as objectively as you can, and go from there. |
