Talk Like a Pirate Day is celebrated every September 19th. Begun as a joke among friends, this fanciful idea quickly took off after it was highlighted in a national newspaper column. Last year, did you remember to dig up any treasure you buried in 2013? If not, get out that shovel. Many holidays start as someone's creative idea, take hold, and evolve into something worthwhile. Historically, some pirates were actually privateers contracted by governments to put the destructive pirates out of business.
Today, call upon your inner pirate and plunder. Scour your home for booty for which you no longer have use and donate it to a local charity. Or delve into your treasure chest and donate a sum to a local animal shelter in the name of your trusty parrot companion. You may wish to have friends and family over and make it a group effort in order to donate a larger amount. Plan a neighborhood "treasure hunt" ending at your home. Include rum punch with your cakes and ale. Aarrghh! |
